Submitting Paper Applications

Paper applications for all assistance programs are available through the state website.

Completed paper applications may be submitted:

  • By fax
  • By mail
  • In person at the Galax Department of Social Services

Because benefits for some programs are prorated based on the date of application, we strongly encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible, either the same day you contact the agency or shortly thereafter.

Processing Time

If you are found eligible, processing time and benefit amounts depend on the date your signed application is received.

Typical processing timeframes include:

  • Medicaid: Up to 45 days
  • TANF: Up to 30 days
  • SNAP: Up to 30 days

Filing an Application & Interviews

You may file an application at any time.

The Galax Department of Social Services operates on an appointment-based system. If an interview is required, you will receive notice of your scheduled appointment by mail.

  • Medicaid does not require an interview
  • SNAP and TANF do require an interview before eligibility can be determined

If you miss a scheduled interview, it is your responsibility to contact the office to reschedule.

In accordance with federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, political beliefs, or disability.

During your interview, an eligibility worker will review your application and explain what documents are needed to complete your case.
