Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program + Employment and Training
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Employment & Training program is a voluntary program that helps SNAP participants develop the skills and resources needed to find employment and move toward long-term self-sufficiency.
In Virginia, SNAP E&T offers multiple services and components that can help you gain employment or advance in the job you already have.
After completing an initial assessment, you and your worker will develop a personalized plan that outlines your short-term and long-term goals, along with the steps to help you reach them.
If you qualify, SNAP E&T can support you in building valuable employability skills and increasing your opportunities for success.
Services May Include:
Based on availability, location, and individual need:
- Job search assistance (where to look, how to apply, etc.)
- Job readiness training
- Vocational training & certification support
- Educational support including:
- Online learning
- Adult Basic Education/GED
- Community college programs (including help finding schools & applying for financial aid)
- Work experience or internship opportunities
- Post-employment services (supplies, uniforms, tools, etc.)
- Supportive services (such as fuel vouchers for transportation when available)
- Employment retention services (assistance with challenges that may affect your job)
How to Get Started
- Decide if SNAP E&T is right for you.
This is the first step toward taking advantage of the program’s resources. - Contact the Galax Department of Social Services to request an appointment and begin your assessment.
- Participate actively and follow through with your plan, while keeping your worker updated if needs change.

SNAP E&T can also connect you with education and training providers for continued skill development. The program is designed to support you each step of the way as you work toward employment stability and success.
